Walchensee is located about 80 kilometres south of Munich in the municipality of Kochel am See. It is one of the deepest, largest and probably also oldest alpine lakes in Germany. It owes its unusual depth of 190 metres to its special tectonic formation.

Kochel am See is a smaller town situated on the lake of the same name (the Kochelsee).
